THINGS TO THINK ABOUT YOUR STOVE Some drawbacks of gas ranges include discoloration of the range to surface with age and usage; knobs have a tendency to break and discolor easily; and the burner grates turn brown with usage. If the decision is to buy a gas range, you will find that there two different types on the market. The old fashioned standing kind and the newer igniter" models. The old kind burns constantly, burning your money along with the gas. The igniter models con serve energy, but you will spend your savings times a factor of ten when you have to replace the oven igniter. If you bake or broil a great deal, the new machines can wind costing you a great deal of money (my viewpoint is not one which will bring many manufacturers begging for my endorsement. You no doubt remember your mother's or your grandmother's gas stove. That thing cooked its heart out and nothing ever went wrong with it. Oh, after about twenty or thirty years, the oven thermostat was out of kilter, but ma just turned tip the thermostat and that was all taken care of. Well, times change. Indestructible gas ranges do not make the owners of appliance stores or service managers very happy. My experience with this spark type igniter has been very good. It lasts longer and costs a lot less to replace than the glow type. I can not understand why many other manufacturers have not designed spark type igniters into their equipment. In the early 1980's the government pressured the, gas appliance manufacturers into designing reduced energy costs into new models. This arm twisting by the government cost the appliance manufacturers millions of dollars in design and engineering costs. One way to get all that development money back, plus interest, would have been to design a very short lived oven igniter into the equipment. I do not know if that is what happened. I do know that almost all the oven igniters I have seen are very low quality, fragile, and expensive to replace. Some are so cheaply made that they can be broken by simply shutting the door too hard.
